Chantilly Tea Answers: Why Tea is Called Tea
Why Tea is Called Tea
Though there is only one written character for tea in China, there are several ways that this character is pronounced--te and cha. Since tea is historically recorded as originating from China these pronunciations influenced worldwide variations--te, tea, tee, the, thee, cha, chai, and chay. Interestingly, in the 19th and 20th centuries British troops were stationed in India and they picked up the Indian word for tea, cha. When troops returned to Britain they continued using the phrase a "cup of cha."
